Voices of Apollo 11

@FORBES

"The Ultimate Tribute To The Fallen Heroes Who Took Us To Moon"

"Metsavainio has created a ‘voices of Apollo 11’ artistic masterpiece to immortalize the mission and its target forever."

The Voices of Apollo 11

are now part of the Moon forever

Click for the larger version of 2500 x 2500 pixels.

Image shows the full Moon made entirely out the text of the transcript of the onboard voice conversations of the Apollo 11 mission. There is nothing else in this photo-based image. Just letters.

A close up of the top of the artwork shows just letters from the authentic voice transcription of Apollo 11 Command Module recorder data.

The Voices

I downloaded NASA's original full transcript of Apollo 11's onboard voice conversations. The idea was to turn this text into an image of the Moon. After a few weeks of intense work at a feverish pace my tribute was ready. Now the Moon is made up entirely of Apollo 11 voice transcription letters.

This is also a tribute to the entire Apollo 11 team: Commander Neil A. Armstrong, Command Module Pilot Michael Collins, and Lunar Module Pilot
Edwin E. Aldrin Jr.

WHY?

I was most gratified and deeply moved when Michael Collins —the Apollo 11 & Gemini 10 astronaut, author, explorer and artist— tweeted following kind words about my work on April 19th, 2021: https://twitter.com/AstroMCollins/status/1384194949009211393

The news of his passing, just nine days later, hit me all the harder — a very emotional moment for me. Out of the blue, I got inspired to create this artwork. I absolutely had to do it right away, which I did.

Michael Collins was affectionately referred to as “the loneliest man in history” for being the command module pilot who flew solo in space behind the Moon and without radio contact with anyone while his colleagues, Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong, set foot on the Moon for the first time in history. Michael was also an artist. His iconic photos made from Moon orbit are true art and part of mankind's greatest cultural heritage treasure.

A similar solitude gripped me while I was creating this tribute image. For being an astronomical photographer and a visual artist often is a very lonely job. Especially this time as I was deeply emotional throughout my creative process for this artwork. Even though I never met him personally, the end of his Earthly mission meant more to me than I was prepared for. I needed to make this photo-based artwork to process the inner storm of my thoughts and feelings.

The Landing Site

The Apollo 11 landing site is marked by two red letters.

The music "Fly me to the Moon"

Frank Sinatra's 1964 recording of "Fly Me to the Moon" became closely associated with NASA's Apollo space program. A copy of the song was played on a Sony TC-50 portable cassette player on the Apollo 10 mission which orbited the Moon,[44] and also on Apollo 11 before the first landing on the Moon.[45] Source Wikipedia, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fly_Me_to_the_Moon

4K videos about the Grand Mosaic of the Milky Way

The only photo in the World showing the Northern Milky Way in this accuracy and depth.

ABOUT THE 4K-VIDEOS

I made two videos showing my very large imaging project, the Grand Mosaic of the Milky Way.
Original photo has so high resolution, that's impossible to show over the web, I made those videos to bring out even some of the accuracy of the original photo.

Please, use a 4K-display or the TV-set to watch the video, if possible.
It does play nicely in normal HD-display but you'll get much more out of this by using the 4K-display.

An experimental 3D-study of the Great galaxy of Andromeda, M31

This is an experimental test with a 3D-conversion of my astronomical image. Only real elements from the original image are used, there is nothing added but the estimated volumetric information!

NOTE. This is a personal vision about shapes and volumes, based on some scientific data, deduction and an artistic impression.

Video

This is a looped video, click to start and stop. Original movie is in HD  1080p resolution.
All the foreground stars from the original image are removed. Starlike objects seen in this animation are actually globular clusters orbiting the Andromeda Galaxy. Click the YouTube logo at lower right corner to see this video in YouTube at full screen, you should set quality to HD 1080p,

Original 2d-image used for this 3d-study

An original  blog post with imaging details can be found from HERE

Info about the technique used

Due to huge distances, real parallax can't be imaged in most of the astronomical objects.
I have developed an experimental technique to convert my astropics to a artificial volumetric models.

My 3-D experiments are a mixture of science and an artistic impression. I collect distance and other information before I do my 3-D conversion. Usually there are known stars, coursing the ionization, so I can place them at right relative distance. If I know a distance to the nebula, I can fine tune distances of the stars so, that right amount of stars are front and behind of the object.

I use a “rule of thumb” method for stars: brighter is closer, but if a real distance is known, I'm using that. Many 3-D shapes can be figured out just by looking carefully the structures in nebula, such as dark nebulae must be at front of the emission nebulae in order to show up etc...

The general structure of many star forming regions is very same, there is a group of young stars, as an open cluster inside of the nebula. The stellar wind from the stars is then blowing the gas away around the cluster and forming a kind of cavitation – or a hole — around it. The pillar-like formations in the nebula must point to a source of stellar wind, for the same reason.

How accurate the final model is, depends how much I have known and guessed right. The motivation to make those 3-D-studies is just to show, that objects in the images are not like paintings on the canvas but really three dimensional objects floating in the three dimensional space. This generally adds a new dimension to my hobby as an astronomical imager.

Astrophotography by J-P Metsavainio, a video

Last weekend I participated to a Finnish Star Party at Artjärvi, southern Finland, as a speaker. Thanks to the organizators, everything went very smoothly!

I made a small movie out of the images used in my presentation. At first, there are couple of minutes some quick info, how my photos are taken. Rest of the movie is made out of my photos taken between 2007 and 2016.

4D video of the Veil Nebula SNR

The weather up here 65N has been cloudy for months. I played with my older images and made couple of  experimental 3D animations out of them. Here is the first one, the Veil Nebula SNR in Cygnus. This is actually a 4D animation since it shows the time too... I made this just for fun, this is not an accurate model of reality but close enough for me.

THE MOON

All Moon movies are made by re-projecting 2D-Moon image to a sphere. After that, the observation location can be freely selected, as long the area of interest stay on the visible area. I like this technique a lot, since the original image stays unprocessed!

The "Bug Nebula", NGC6302 as an animation

The animation is made by splitting the original 2D-image to a layers by the image content. Layers are then taken to a 3D-modeling software, "TrueSpace", and projected to a 3D-surfaces and animated to a movie file.
Stars are placed to Z-axel by apparent brightness , brighter ones are closer.
